WordPress Multisites & the disappearing subsites via directories

Many WordPress site owners has experienced some of their subsites not displaying a full list of subsites via directories. But its possible to view an array of subsites via directories. That’s same way how you view your list of subsites via subdomains. Since subdomain-based sites are easier to manage, you can resolve use of these long URLs that are too difficult to share to certain social media sites. However; some people aren’t NOT comfortable with setting up wildcard subdomains because, they’re not familiar with setting up subdomains via their hosting panel. And decided to use this format of running their sites…

As you set subsites as directories… your URLs get longer

Subsites via directories always have long URLs… for example; your-sitename.com/advertising-hub/. This is a long URL of a site at the advertising-hub directory, this is common for some people who were NOT familiar with subdomain setup, or some people wanted to have longer URLs

To create these subsites via subdirectories

If you already have an install of wordpress that is young enough to be modified for a multisite, but you already modified it for new subsites via directories… follow these steps:

  1. Go to your-sitename.com/wp-admin/network and go to all sites, and activate the Add New.
  2. Give your new site a name. For example; if you wanted to host your own advertising hub for your advertisers… you can name it Advertising Hub, or anything you like. Give your site a brief description, and choose if your site can be visible, or not visible to search engines.
  3. Create a new site.
  4. For multiple subsites… repeat the steps above.
  5. Note

If your WordPress install is old, you may need to rely on subdomains instead. And you need to be comfortable with setting up a wildcard subdomain to do so.

I did created these sites, but these sites are NOT appearing what I expected to!

Your admin bar has no room to display all of your sites like usual, but they’re always listed on a sites list via /network/ control panel on your WordPress site. Sometimes you may need to scroll your screen to see the rest of your sites.

Check if you haven’t deleted your sites by mistake. If you deleted a site; you can’t undo it.

In common; your sites are arranged in order via ascending, or descending,–or last activity, depending on your WordPress install on your server. You can always tell if your sites via directories are present by looking for a /subsitename/ after your primary site domain.

Having your sites implemented like this is kind of like your version of Google Sites.

By the next time as you create these sites, try using the sites list at the admin control panel. That’s the place where you can view, and manage your sites. They will only disappear if you delete these sites.

If you believe your sites are NOT appearing what you just expected to do so… check if your plugins were doing some bad stuff with your site, if they do, turn them off, and try if these sites can appear again. If they don’t… try updating WordPress, or reinstalling WordPress altogether

If this is a new bug what you’ve experiencing; be sure to file a bug to the WordPress developers, and provide steps to reproduce a problem.
