Blind Draft2Digital Users & the Attack of the Visual Interface… & Accessibility Issues

Recently; I experimented with a screen-reader, Chromevox on my Chromebook. I updated to the latest version of Chrome OS. If you were recently using a keyboard navigation… it used to work, now broken! That leads you to these following questions:

Why this interface on Draft2Digital’s website is not screen-reader supported?

Why These interactive elements aren’t being focused what I expected to when using Chromevox, or any other major screen-reader?

I contacted Draft2Digital for assistance,–regarding accessibility. And I got a response. But why they didn’t implement accessibility features what I expected to?

The only workaround is by using a mouse to activate these interactive elements. Well, my screen-reader can jump on these focusable elements. But why some elements are NOT design for my current screen-reader what I’m using?

If you answered “YES” to all of these questions; most likely you have a hard time with this website interface itself. Maybe it’s only written in Java, or someting,–or maybe its only written in flash. I believe Chromevox only supports HTML5, not flash. Most flash elements are NOT built for screen-reader support. Accessibility is important for all websites to comply with mandatory accessibility requirements.

If this is the case you experienced difficulties with Draft2Digital itself… its always a good idea to contact support by doing the following:

For Chromevox Users via Chrome OS

  • If you used Draft2Digital before; send them an email with screenshots to describe what’s actually happening. Always provide a desired audio-recording to supplement your instructions to reproduce a problem.
  • Write down as much information as you can. This is helpful if you were reporting a large issue.
  • Provide your version number of your OS on your chromebook by going to chrome://help.
  • Send your report, and wait for an email response.
  • If all that fails; try giving them a call if needed.
  • If you recently updated to a newer version of Chrome OS via a Chromebook; Provide them updates to your new issue.

If you can manage/handle the interface of Draft2Digital via a mouse,–be sure to use a screen-recording app on your device, and send your video to Draft2Digital support team.

If you were using a different kind of a computer/device

You may need to experiment with a screen-reader to check if you can use this site smoothly.

Caution

Never send death threats against this website, or the owner of this site. If you were doing this… your account will be terminated, and you will be reported to local authorities.

Always wait for any possible changes. It may take some time. The more data you provide when reporting issues… the better they will find the way to implement accessibility to their site. Be patient! It takes days or so for the developers to implement this feature for you. As a work-around; you can sign up for a secondary self-publishing platform that will distribute to major ebook vendors. Think twice before you ever sign up for a different self-publishing service.

Never use foul words… this can make it worse for you and the website owner/operators.
